5d. Invisible Cities

Book jacket design

Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities has a basis in fact, in that it includes characters who actually lived and interacted with each other, but from there the book diverges into colorful fable and make-believe cities and situations.

For my cover design, I used a thirteenth-century European map as a starting point. The map focusses on the main character’s home of Venice, but has been altered to include modern elements like an airplane and a suspension bridge — two elements that find their way into the book. The effect is subtle, but provokes curiousity in those who see it.
